ARONA |

| |
ARONA , uninteresting in itself, is on the main railway line, and
its cheap hotels make it a useful base for visiting the rest of the lake.
The one sight here is a thirty-metre-high copper statue of St Charles
Borromeo, who was born in the now ruined Castle of Arona. It's hollow
and, if you don't suffer from claustrophobia or vertigo, climb up into
its empty head and look out across the lake (April-Oct daily
8.30am-12.30pm & 2-6.30pm; Oct closes at 5pm; Nov-March Sat & Sun
9am-12.30pm & 2-5pm; L4000/¬2.07).
If you decide to stay in Arona, the Lido campsite (tel 0322.243.383) is
right on the lake shore, a short walk from the train station. The
cheapest hotels are the Ponte , Via Torini 19 (tel 0322.45.317; up to
L60,000/¬30.99), and the Antico Gallo , Via Botelli 13 (tel
0322.243.137; up to L60,000/¬30.99); both have a bar and restaurant, but
neither has en-suite rooms.
