FABRIANO |
| Famous for two things - paper-making and Gentile da Fabriano, the
best of the International Gothic artists - FABRIANO is now heavily
industrialized and a dismal town at first sight. You're most likely to
pass through on your way on to Umbria and Rome, and frankly there's
little reason to stop off unless it's to visit the Museum of Paper and
Watermarks (Tues-Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 10am-noon & 4-7pm; L6500/¬3.36),
housed in the ex-convent of San Domenico. The sort of place kids are
dragged to on rainy days, it's owned by the biggest of Fabriano's paper
mills, Miliani, which produces a staggering 900km of paper each day,
including watermarked paper for banknotes of various currencies. |
