manarola |
| MANAROLA is almost as enchanting as Vernazza, its pastel-shaded
houses crowded impossibly up the sides of a prominent headland of dark
rock. The fourteenth-century church of San Lorenzo in the village has
another beautiful rose window. On the road from Manarola to Corniglia
above the village is the hamlet of Groppo , home to the Cooperativa
Agricola Cinque Terre , which offers tastings and direct sale of the
local wines (Mon-Sat 10am-noon & 2-6pm; tel 0187.920.435). Manarola's two hotels are outstanding. Family-run Ca' d'Andrean , Via Discovolo 101 (tel 0187.920.040, fax 0187.920.452; L90,000-120,000/¬46.48-61.98) takes a real pride in its service and its few, airy rooms (some with balcony); Marina di Piccolo , Via Discovolo 192 (tel 0187.920.103, fax 0187.920.966; L120,000-150,000/¬61.98-77.47) has six pleasant rooms in the main building and four in a less inviting annexe. The small non-HI hostel Ostello 5 Terre is a clean, friendly place 300m up the hill from the station at Via Riccobaldi 21 (tel 0187.920.215, fax 0187.920.218, www.cinqueterre.net/ostello ; L30,000/¬15.49); you may need to book several weeks ahead in summer for dorm beds or en suite rooms. |
