| An obvious trip from central Palermo is the short (11km) run to MONDELLO , a small seaside resort tucked under the northern bluff of Monte Pellegrino. It features one of Sicily's best stretches of sand (rather than the more usual stones), the two-kilometre beach curving round to a tiny working harbour and the remnants of a medieval tower. There's a line of restaurants overlooking the water and the fish, naturally, is temptingly fresh. Alternatively, you could grab some of the excellent snack food from the waterfront stalls and hit the beach. Although often crowded, summer nights at Mondello are fun - the scene of Palermo's real passeggiata. In winter it's more laid-back, and rarely very busy, but the restaurants and snack stalls are still open and it's usually warm enough to swim. To get to Mondello, take bus #806, or #833 in summer, from the Politeama theatre or Viale della Libertà - a half-hour ride. |
