| The nearest village to Nuoro is OLIENA (4-11 buses daily from Nuoro),
12km distant on Monte Corrasi and visible across the deep valley south
of the provincial capital. Rising to 1349m, this dramatically rugged
limestone elevation forms part of the Sopramonte massif, famed as the
haunt of bandits until relatively recent times. Oliena itself prefers
its reputation as the producer of one of the island's best wines, a dry,
almost black concoction that turns lighter and stronger over the years.
Organized trips around Sopramonte's caves and crags leave from Oliena. Contact one of the operators in the village, for example Levamus at Via Vittorio Emanuele 27 (tel 0784.285.190) or the Cooperativa Turística Enis, 3km outside town in Localitá Maccione (tel 0784.288.363), which also has rooms (L60,000-90,000/¬30.99-46.48) and pitches for camping. |
