| The SS12 from Modena becomes really beautiful after Pavullo nel
Frignano, especially in spring when the colours are startling - white
blossom against bright green meadows. There is not much reason to stop
until Lama Mocogno, except perhaps to sample the award-winning
traditional fare at the Parco Corsini in Pavullo (Viale Martiri 11 (tel
0536.20.129). Camping Valverde (tel 0536.44.045; June-Aug), is a
peaceful place to camp. At La Santona , prodotti del sottobosco (specialities
of the woods - berries, fungi etc) are on sale in summer and autumn,
when people from Bologna and the other main towns around visit the area,
mainly to eat. PIEVEPÉLAGO is a modern-looking market town with a couple of inexpensive places to stay , of which the Albergo Bucaneve is the more appealing, 1km up the road from the village at Via Giardini 31 (tel 0536.71.383; L90,000-120,000/46.48-61.98). Three ATCM buses a day make the trip here from Bologna via Vignola, six daily from Modena, and it's well worth a stop if you're passing through. La Capanna Celtica , Via Roma 24, serves an exceptional blend of Emilian and Tuscan cooking, though not especially cheaply. In the evenings Birreria-Paninoteca Il Cantuccio is lively and is open on Tuesdays, when practically all else is closed. An easy path leads up from the town to Lago Santo a small lake in a large glacial basin. The hike takes about 3 hours (follow the red and white flashes painted on rocks along the way). Or, in summer, there's a bus that takes you up. If you want to stay , try the very friendly Rifugio Vittoria (tel 0536.71.509, www.rifugiovittoria.it ; L60,000-90,000/30.99-46.48) right next to the lake, in whose restaurant you can sample porcini mushrooms, game and fruits of the forest. Check the rifugio's Web site for detailed information on hiking trails and seasonal activities in the area. |
